Shonda Rhimes roundtable What it really means to be a leader
Shonda Rhimes roundtable What it really means to be a leaderShonda Rhimes roundtable What it really means to be a leaderI look at everybody as if they have an opportunity to teach me something. Because they do, says Shondaland founder, television visionary, and super boss Shonda Rhimes. As part of Shondaland and Microsofts partnership, were bringing inspiring women together for a series of roundtable discussions - a place where women of varied backgrounds can talk freely about geschftlicher umgang, staying passionate about what they do, and the challenges they face in their everyday lives. In The Language of Leadership, the first of a two-part roundtable discussion (you can view the video here), Shonda hosts Valerie Jarrett, Mieko Kusano, and Chloe Arnold for a no-holds-barred conversation about being a great leader, creating positive corporate culture, and what it really means to challenge the status quo.- - - Youve got to listen and let people know that youre actually curious abo ut what they have to say, says Valerie Jarrett, who knows a thing or two about listening. As a longtime senior advisor to President Obama and his director of the Office of Public Engagement and Intergovernmental Affairs, Jarrett spent years navigating competing viewpoints and assisting in making the tough decisions that would benefit the most people. (And, of course, she worked for one of the greatest listeners to ever occupy the Oval Office.)Listening is an attentive, inclusive leadership skill thats crucial to fostering employee participation and investment in work - especially when your employees are women. Its well-documented that in mixed groups, women speak far less than men, and are often interrupted or have their ideas repeated by men, who then get the credit. Female leaders can counter this by hiring more women, but as it stands, women comprise only 25 percent of executive- and senior-level officials and managers, and count for just six percent of CEOs (despite making up n early half of the workforce in the U.S.).Youve got to listen. As one of the few women leaders in tech-related industries, Mieko Kusano, senior director of Experience Strategy at Sonos, often sees the tangible benefits of having more women at the table, especially when it comes to sharing and supporting each others ideas.Other women pick up the thread, Kusano says. If you make a point and somebody else in the room says a followup point, rather than an interruption, you have a better forum to amplify your voice. Its not just women who should be included - for office cultures to work most efficiently, they should be made up of as many diverse voices as possible. Not only is diversity good for morale, but it can also benefit a businesss bottom line. Studies have shown that ethnically and racially diverse companies are 35 percent more likely to have higher financial returns than those that are not. Because diversity isnt just about checking boxes - a workplace thrives when its teams brin g a wide range of experiences to their decision-making and goals. Its like a jigsaw puzzle, says Jarrett. You dont just want the smartest people, you want the best team - complementing skill sets, complementing life experiences, complementary perspectives. We found that sitting in a room with people who had very different perspectives and life experiences enhanced the decision making process.Once a leader builds the best team, a secondary challenge is earning that teams trust. Effective leaders who listen to their employees, admit their own mistakes, and demonstrate their capability on a daily basis are more likely to be able to create a workplace that every employee, no matter their background, wants to invest in.Trust is such an important value - especially creatively. For Chloe Arnold, cofounder of the female tap dance band Syncopated Ladies, there would be no creative output without the investment and trust from each member of her team. The success of every dancer and the group as a whole is quite physically interconnected - if one dancer misses a step, whole formations might be thrown off. Cultivating belief in one another, and her as the groups leader, is integral to the creative possibilities of the whole enterprise.Trust is a really important value, Arnold says. Especially creatively. If a dancer doesnt feel like you trust them, then theyre gonna make decisions based around what they think you want. And thats not innovative, and its not genuine or authentic.Whether youre building a team of moving bodies onstage or around a conference room table, success - and its lifeblood, good leadership - comes back to listening and learning. More than company financial gains or industry accolades, the truest sign of successful leadership is building a workplace where employees feel safe to voice their most pie-in-the-sky notions, to challenge tradition, and to know that theyre inherently valued for their skills, ideas, and individualities. One of the real great s trengths of leadership is learning how to listen, says Jarrett. And learn. And then give people the sense of empowerment that their opinion actually matters to you. This article first appeared on Shondaland.

How to have a great time in Berlin, Europes hippest city
How to have a great time in Berlin, Europes hippest cityHow to have a great time in Berlin, Europes hippest cityChristopher Isherwood famously wrote about the debauchery of early 1930s Weimar Berlin in his book, The Berlin Stories, the basis for the movie Cabaret. I decided to keep a diary of my recent visit to thehugely popular German city. While my experiences were nowhere near as racy as Isherwoods, I found out that a little of the decadent nightlife depicted still exists today. The Ritz-Carlton, BerlinThe flight to Berlin from New York takes eight hours, so try to fly direct and preferably with a flatbed to adjust to the time change easily. Waiting for me at the Brandenburg Airport welches my new best friend, a driver with my name on an iPad. Twenty minutes later I pulled up to the Ritz-Carlton and welches met by Ugur the doorman who greeted me with Welcome to your home in Berlin. Once inside, I was dazzled by the sweeping, grand marble staircase.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreFor those who know the difference between a Bentley and a bicycle, is one of the Ritz-Carltons tag lines, and it fits. The 5-star hotel is sumptuous, elegant and understated. Located in the dynamic Potsdamer Platz quarter, it is perfectly situated overlooking the Tiergarten, the citys famous park, and close to attractions like the Berlin Wall, Museum Island, historic landmarks and shopping. The Ritzs grandest suite is the 3100-square-foot penthouse for $17,000 a night. Mine was a more modest corner suite with foyer, dressing area with extravagant closet space and a luxurious gold marble bath with a heated floor. The generously proportioned living room in shades of green with splashes of deep purple had a comfortable seating area and two expansive windows with sweeping city views. The Art of Cocktails and PerfumeryThe hotel is known for its Curtain Club, a classic, paneled cocktail lounge hidden away from the bustling city on an upper floor, and The Lounge, renowned for high tea. But without a doubt its Fragrances, a bar where cocktails are combined with perfumes, that is most unique. The Art of Cocktails and Perfumery is its motto get on board with it.Arnd Henning Heissen, the bar manager, has created a cocktail list based on sensory experiences. Each drink presents an olfactory dimension tied to a popular perfume. While sipping your cocktail, youre inhaling scents as part of the experience and there are spirits that match the scent thats most appealing to you. This concept makes for terrific conversation if you go with friends as theres literally nothing like it.Dial C for ScandalBerlin has been attracting artists and musicians from around the world for years, and the city is bursting with creative types, like Colette Lumiere, simply called Colette. A French-born American multimedia artist, Colette is known for her work exploring gender roles in performance art, street art and photography. An artist-in-residence at the Lwenpalais in Berlin, Colette knows her way around, and she wanted to show me the citys cutting-edge venues and important historical sites.Gallery CrawlWe kicked off my Berlin weekend with a gallery crawl to check out the citys vibrant art scene. First stop was the Knig Galerie. Housed in a former church, its one of Berlins major galleries. The wildly impressive structure is dominated by a cathedral height room where on this night we viewed an avant-garde video piece. Next was the Sprth Magers Gallery where we saw a terrific installation by John Bock. The artist had created a series of African inspired forms and huts around the triple-height space. The artist, covered in tribal tattoos, hovered stories above us peering down and working on miniature artworks. We continued our crawl at Seven Star Gallery, an edgy spot that is literally half underground. Earlier, there had been an avant-garde musical performance by Bob Rutm an at a venue upstairs, and the gallery invited him to play afterward. His instruments, fashioned from string and sheets of tin, made mysterious, eerie sounds that filled the cavernous, candle-lit space. The gallery ersatzdarstellers as a bar, and a lively group gathered, talking art, music and design. The KitKat ClubAfter fortifying ourselves with a little goulash at a charming local distribution policy, we decided it was time to brave the KitKat Club, renowned for its techno and trance music, and its, uh, uninhibited party atmosphere. To clarify, guests are permitted to engage in sex acts openly at this venue. And they do, but not me Im a voyeur to the core.Opened in 1994 by Austrian pornographic filmmaker Simon Thaur and his partner, Kirsten Kruger, this place is named after the Kit Kat Club burlesque theater in the musical Cabaret.Be advised there is a strict dress code and I dont mean black tie. Patrons must wear leather, latex, fetish, kinky or just look gorgeous to get in.Tip if you show up in street clothes, try ditching your shirt. The Boros BunkerOn Saturday, we hit the Boros Bunker, a gallery in a former Nazi bunker thats home to the Boros collection, founded by Christian and Karen Boros to showcase their contemporary art collection. While searching for the space, the Boros considered all kinds of abandoned spaces, including schools, hospitals and even swimming pools, and were so smitten when they found what they call surely the ugliest building in Berlin that they moved in. They now reside in a 5900-square-foot glass-walled apartment above the gallery. You need an appointment to visit and the exhibition changes every four years. A tour, led by an extremely knowledgeable guide, takes 90 minutes and is definitely worth it. I participated in creating a work by sticking black tape from a large pile onto a mural, and later, made an artwork of a knife by stamping a paper with a wood block, an instant memento of Berlin and The Bunker. The Clrchens BallroomAft erward, we were starved and headed to Clrchens Ballroom. The Clrchens is an institution in Berlin, a restaurant where they stage concerts, everything from gypsy music to classical. Locals of all ages dance everything from the tango to the cha-cha. Built in 1913, it was rescued from the wrecking tanzabend in 2005 by its current owners, who left it artfully faded, complete with chipped paint and cracked mirrors. Check out the piece de resistance, the mirrored ballroom upstairs. Later, we took a short walk down Bodestrasse, peering in the windows of a dozen galleries this is Berlins SoHo.Museum IslandA side trip to Museum Island did not disappoint. Archaeologically monumental, the island contains five museums Some of the buildings suffered damage during World War II and only reopened as recently as 2009. The entire complex is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Pergamon Museum is one of Germanys most popular museums, and for good reason. Here youll find monumental buildings including an e normous altar that was likely part of a temple and the Ishtar Gate of Babylon, built by King Nebuchadnezzar in 575 BC. Dedicated to the goddess Ishtar, it was one of the original Seven Wonders of the World and was reconstructed here in 1930, using the original bricks. Then it was on to the Neues Museum, where we found more ancient relics, this time from Egypt, including the iconic bust of Queen Nefertiti from 1345 BC. It is one of the most copied works of ancient Egypt, and that makes her one of the most famous women of the ancient world. And yes, its the subject of a longstanding dispute- Egypt wants it back.Across the street is the huge Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, a Berlin landmark. Hit by bombs during the war, the damaged spire remains, and the ground floor is now a memorial hall.Checkpoint CharlieAs most visitors to Berlin do, I stopped at Checkpoint Charlie, the most-trafficked crossing point between East and West Berlin during the Cold War. After reunification, Checkpoint C harlie became a tourist attraction and is now located in the Allied Museum. We walked a few blocks to see what was left of the original Berlin Wall. That was pretty grim, but the tales of the ingenious ways that people escaped were impressive. My favorite was the girl who fit into two adjoining suitcases and entered West Berlin via train.Soho House BerlinDinner that night was at SoHo House Berlin. The members-only club is situated in an imposing building that was originally a department store. In 1933, the stores Jewish owners were pushed out, and the space became the headquarters of the Reich Youth Leadership organization. Today, members can choose from various dining options, the Club Bar, a screening room, fitness facility and spa, plus a rooftop bar, pool and kitchen. Its also a hotel, offering 65 rooms, 20 apartments and four spacious lofts. A favorite of celebrities, the legendary Soho House discretion also applies in Berlin, lips- and phones- are sealed while on the premises. The club floors are warm and cozy. And I can attest, the roast chicken and champagne are delicious.Berghain, The Worlds Top ClubOnce the clock struck 2 am we headed to Berghain, the top night club in the world which has a super door policy. Getting in was harder than getting into Studio 54 when it was at its pinnacle. But Colettes glamorous friend Sasha, in black velvet opera cape, whisked us past two thousand freezing people right to the most beastly doorman on the planet, and voila we were in.No exaggeration, this dance club is exclusive and the skinhead door gods arent even bribable. The Telegraph even assigned a reporter to write about the experience of getting in not the club itself, just getting in. (The reporter didnt make the grade after waiting forever in the cold. When the door staff told him to forget it, he asked why, and they said, Because we decided).Holocaust MemorialOn Sunday, we went to the heartbreaking Holocaust Memorial, a memorial to the slaughtered Jews. This monumental gut-wrenching installation consists of more than 2,700 concrete slabs laid in a grid pattern on a sloping field. Resembling coffins, as you walk among the slabs, you feel immersed in a maze, a forest of stone. It is a profoundly moving experience. The memorial opened on May 10, 2005, 60 years after the end of WWII. There is an underground distribution policy of Information, bearing the names of three million Holocaust victims.Charlottenburg Sanssouci PalacesIf you have a little extra time, the fabulously lavish Charlottenburg Palace is one of the top attractions. Dating from the 17th Century, its baroque interiors and formal gardens are stunning. The largest palace in Berlin, it was damaged during the war but has been meticulously restored.Similarly, if you have a spare afternoon, take a 45-minute drive to see Sanssouci Palace, the summer home of Frederick the Great, which was built in 1745. It is so beautiful and is the German counterpart of Versailles.Brandenburg Gate Reichstag BuildingBe smart and have your concierge book a visit to the Reichstag, Berlins parliament, just to see the Norman Foster-designed dome. This glass space reminds me of the Guggenheim Museum with its spiral walkway overlooking the citys monuments. The building was heavily damaged during World War II and was closed off by the Berlin Wall during the Cold War era. Artists Christo and Jean-Claude famously wrapped it in 1995, before reconstruction began, drawing millions of visitors.Nearby is the Brandenburg Gate, one of Berlins most important sites, and a must-see. Built in 1791 by Prussian King Frederick William II, throughout history it has been home to historical events and became a symbol of post-war divided Germany when it was closed off by the Berlin Wall. Later, the gate became a symbol of the countrys reunification in 1990.The Paris Bar Caf EinsteinOne of the citys artsy hot spots, this cozy bote is as trendy as it looks, from the neon sign outside to the art-splashe d interior. A hub for art, music and film, the Paris has attracted stars like David Bowie, Madonna and Iggy Pop over the years. Try the lamb chops or the bouillabaisse.Another landmark is Caf Einstein, one of the most beloved coffee houses in Berlin, housed in a building that miraculously survived the bombing that leveled the surrounding area. The food is great, and the strudel is out of this world. The Lwenpalais, Starke Foundation ExhibitionsThe Lwenpalais, a magnificent manor house built in 1903, has a storied history, and in 1930 was divided into flats for well-known actors and scientists of the era. Flash forward to 1987, when Jrg Peter Starke inherited the estate and founded the Starke Foundation. He invited artists to use the apartments as studios and began mounting exhibitions. The Lwenpalais quickly became a popular venue for art lovers. My friend and Berlin tour guide, Colette, has an artist residency there. In her art-strewn studio, she has created one of her famous boudoir interiors. This magical space, draped in pale pink fabrics and tulle, houses sculptures and paintings including new works based on her recent African safari. She is open to private studio visits.www.visitberlin.de/enThis article originally appeared on TravelSquire. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

Recruiting the Overqualified
Recruiting the OverqualifiedRecruiting the OverqualifiedRecruiting the OverqualifiedIts increasingly common to see a number of overqualified candidates apply for open positions. This can be overwhelming when youre simply looking to find qualified candidates. But some managers may be reluctant to hire the overqualified, either because they believe that they wont make good employees, or because they feel threatened by people who are more qualified than they are. The bottom line be sure your recruitment strategy will help you attract the great employees.Management Advisor Joanne Murray spoke with about ways to overcome the reluctance to hire the overqualified candidateMonster Overqualified candidates often have a stigma attached to them. Why? Joanne Murray This is one of a series of old rules that havent applied for a very long time. Individuals used to be tainted if theyd been laid off, and now its kind of a rite of passage. There was a whole set of reluctances that could be justified or warranted back then, but in the current market, its voreingestellt practice for overqualified people to apply. What were the old rules? You mentioned that in the past there were concerns that might have been justifiable. I think the old rules were that if you hired somebody that was overqualified, he or she will be dissatisfied, will leave quickly, will ask for a promotion before youre ready to give them one, will want more money and will be resentful and a problem employee. I really think its a myth that people leave I think people who go for positions for which theyre overqualified, I dont think there are any data out there to suggest that they leave with any greater frequency than people who are normally qualified.I think the new rules are that many people have taken a period of unemployment as a time to reflect on whats really important to them, and they may very well be applying for a job for which theyre overqualified but that has really, truly been a better fit. But employe rs have to really mine for that, because it may just be that thats the only job there, but they dont really want it.Does personality and fit then become more of a concern if youre dealing with an overqualified group of candidates? Because the pools are so clearly competent and qualified, personality and fit although theyve always been important are the basis of the decision nowadays. Because it isnt just a matter of this person could do the job. Its would I enjoy having this person, in this environment, doing this job with me? Can I manage to ride up on the elevator every day with her, or is she going to make me crazy? What if there is personal reluctance to hire someone who is overqualified and/or more qualified than they are? I think its an understandable concern, but its a weakness. The strongest managers hire the fruchtwein qualified people, and then foster an environment where they can just take off. If they can keep the broader goal of the overall accomplishments and performa nce of the department in mind, then they definitely want to have the most dynamic, talented team they can get.But personal threat is a real consideration, because they also dont want somebody whos going to come in and show them up or jump over their head or in some way challenge their leadership. The pivotal moment for them is, is this because theyre personally threatened, or is this a legitimate threat? How do you determine if a candidate might be a legitimate threat? One is you can directly talk to the person about it, and then gauge what kind of response you get. I would address the issue of being overqualified from the beginning and directly ask, How is it that youre going to be able to live on $30,000 less a year? How is it that youre going to deal with not being decision maker and sometimes needing to implement decisions with which you strongly disagree, and do so cheerfully? The last thing I would say is that its really important to trust your gut. In a world of overqualified c andidates, companies have their choice, and they should never rush a search. They should always take the time to find the right person. People often move too quickly to hire people, and then they really regret it.

Can Bad Etiquette Hurt Your Company Culture
Can Bad Etiquette Hurt Your Company CultureProper etiquette isnt just for the Miss Manners set, its also extremely important in the office. You want to maintain a positive company culture to keep your employees motivated and productive. For obvious reasons, employee morale isnt likely to improve if your company ignores simple etiquette rules.Companies expend time and effort to establish a top-notch company culture because they know this is the best way to attract top talent. From tech giants like Apple to newly established startups, companies wouldnt spend so much time developing a great organizational culture if it wasnt an important way to snag great talent.Unfortunately, many companies ignore basic etiquette in the rush to dream up great benefits and fun perks. Your company might be the most fun place to work in the marketplace but if you ignore proper manners youll find employee morale down, regardless of your unlimited vacation time or office basketball hoop. Proper respect for your coworkers and employees is the best and simplest way to maintain a positive organizational culture. Here are some easy etiquette tips your company should follow in order to attract the candidates you want to see in a video interview and keep them engaged when they become productive employeesPut the cell phones awayToday, 91 percent of Americans have their cell phones within reach 24/7. So its understandable the very idea of parting with your cell phone might feel like ignoring your best friend. Cell phones in the office, however, can be a big distraction at best and an impenitent to actual communication at worse. Nothing is worse etiquette than stopping mid-conversation to answer a ringing cell phone. Your coworker will be annoyed and feel as if you arent respecting their time and listening with your full attention. While it may be painful, the best way to avoid this problem is to have employees put their cell phones away during work hours. Its also important to make sure all cel l phones brought into the office are put immediately on vibrate or silent. You might want to make sure you dont miss a call, but no one wants to listen to your ironic 90s-era boy band ringtone for five minutes because you ran to the bathroom. While the no cell phone rule doesnt have to be strictly enforced, especially if an employee has an emergency situation, make sure your workers know work hours are for communicating with team members instead of family and friends. This will improve communication, which will in turn improve your organizational culture.Be careful around the holidaysThe holidays can be a tough time to observe proper etiquette. Things get tricky, especially when it comes to gift giving. Some employees might feel like they need to get gifts for everyone, some will try to use presents to get in good with the boss, while others will want to conserve money without looking like a Scrooge.Perhaps the best way to avoid this awkward situation and totenstill protect your orga nizational culture around the holidays is to focus on giving back instead of just plain giving. Instead of doing a Secret Santa and watching your workers awkwardly try to figure out what to get people they might not know very well, focus on the spirit of the season instead. Start a toy drive, collect money for charity, or plan a volunteer trip for your company. Employees will feel good they gave back and avoid hurt feelings over poor holiday etiquette.Watch your bonding activitiesTo establish a fun organizational culture, you might want to plan outside trips and activities with your workers. Just be careful what kind of outings you plan. Going to a local bar after work for a few drinks can seem fun and harmless on the surface, but a lot of etiquette problems can hide below the surface.Any company trip or party with alcohol involved has the chance to get out of control and be a nightmare for both employers and employees. It might seem fun the night of the party, but its likely to be mora than a little awkward the next day at work when hangovers abound. Make sure your workers know proper etiquette dictates they dont get drunk at office parties. You might even want to avoid temptation and go for activities that are high on fun and team cooperation and low on imbibing, like team sports or trivia nights. To safeguard the company culture youve worked so hard to establish, pay attention to these simple etiquette rules in the office. Your employees will thank you with increased engagement and productivity. Plus youll become known as a workplace which respects employees, meaning youll be more likely to see the great talent you need on the other side of the webcam in a video interview. What are some etiquette tips you can use to improve your company culture? How to Answer a Weird Interview Question If you are asked an interview question that seems bizarre, dont panic. Below is a list of tips on how to handle a weird interview question. Prepare. The best way to prepare for any interview question is to practice. Practice answering common interview questions with a friend this will help give you confidence during the interview. Ask a friend to ask you a couple of tough interview questions during your practice as well. Also, take a look at some questions that might be trickier than they seem at first glance.Stay Calm. If you are asked a question that stumps you, first take a deep breath. Maintain good posture, and look the interviewer in the eye. You want to appear calm and confident, even if you dont feel that way. Buy Some Time. If you draw a blank, know that it is ok to take a little pause before answering. You can also buy some time with a comment such as, that is a very interesting question let me think about that for a moment.Ask Questions. Most odd interview questions are intended to assess your critical thinking skills. Quite often, there is no right answer. Explaining your reasoning out loud as you respond to the question will demonstrate your thought process, even if you struggle to arrive at the answer. If you are at all confused, ask clarifying questions. Think About the Job. Remember that interview questions are designed to determine whether or not you have the skills required for the job. As you answer a question, think about answering in such a way that demonstrates a skill or quality you have that qualifies you for the job. For example, if the interviewer asks what color best represents you, you might say, blue, because it is a calming color, and I am good at staying calm under pressure.Come Back to it Later. If your mind is still blan k, consider saying something like, That is a very interesting question. May I take some time to consider it and get back to you later? Hopefully, after a little time, you will be able to answer the question. Follow-Up. If you could not answer the question by the end of the interview, include a response to the question in your thank you letter.

75 Jobs With Flexible Hours
75 Jobs With Flexible Hours 75 Jobs With Flexible Hours If youâre tired of the nine-to-five grind, youâre not alone. Fortunately, jobs with flexible hours are on the rise, due in part to an increasing awareness of the importance of work-life balance, the growth of the gig economy, and the improvement of telecommuting and remote collaboration tools. What You Should Know About Working Flexible Hours Before you start looking for a job with flexible hours, determine what youâre looking for, specifically. âFlexible hoursâ is an umbrella term that is used to describe multiple different schedules. It could mean that you are required to work a number of hours, but it is up to you when you complete these hours. For example, a company might allow its full-time employees to work whenever they want to fulfill their 40 hours per week. Or, in the case of freelance or contract work, you might be assigned a project and work as many hours as needed to complete it, thereby setting your own schedule. Lastly, in the case of gig jobs- driving for a rideshare company, tutoring on the side, pet sitting, etc.- you might be able to work as little or as often as you choose, during the week or just on weekends, based on your availability, although you should keep in mind there often will be maximum or minimum hour requirements depending on company policies or expectations. Where to Find Job Listings There are several ways to find a job with a flexible schedule. You can search the traditional job sites using keywords like flexible, flexible schedule, or set your own hours along with keywords that match the type of position youre seeking. If youre looking for a job in a specific location, search Google, and Google for Jobs will generate a list of positions that match your interests. If you would jump at the opportunity to work as a freelancer, look at the flexible jobs on sites that focus on gig jobs and freelance positions. The more sites you use, the better your chances of finding a position thats a good fit for your schedule. Craigslist also can be a good resource for gig jobs or other jobs with flexible hours. You may also find opportunities on your local Nextdoor.com site. Its also a good idea to get familiar with some job titles appropriate for you that might offer flexible schedules. Not all such jobs will always have the benefit of flexible hours; there are many other factors that will determine this. In general, though, jobs that donât require real-time collaboration with other people will be more likely to have flexible hours than those that do. In addition, jobs that can be done remotely often are more likely to have flexible hours. Technical Jobs Jobs in the technology industry are among some of the most common types of jobs with flexible hours, due in part to the fact that they can often be done remotely. There is also a lot of freelance and contract work available in this industry, which deals with everything from software design to web design to solving clients technical issues. With jobs that operate on a 24-hour schedule- security guards, locksmiths, drivers, and dispatch managers, for example- you might not be able to work only when you want. Rather, youâd have flexibility beyond the typical nine-to-five schedule. The History of Applicant Tracking Systems
The History of Applicant Tracking Systems The History of Applicant Tracking Systems Itâs hard to believe all the changes that have taken place in how people apply for jobs within the past 40 years. With the spur of the internet, applications moved quickly from classifieds and paper submissions to email and eventually online portals. With the facilitation of submitting job applications thanks to sites like Monster.com, more people began submitting more applications for more positions. To help hiring managers maintain the surge in applications, they needed to develop a system- Applicant Tracking Systems. As you are probably aware, Applicant Tracking Systems, or ATS, break down applications by word to help hiring managers find skill matches for positions (which is very helpful when suddenly faced with an average of 118 applications per position). So how do people looking for jobs now combat these Applicant Tracking Systems? Thatâs where Jobscan comes in. Read more: What is an applicant tracking system? Director Lands C-Level Job By Tracking Trends
Director Lands C-Level Job By Tracking Trends Director Lands C-Level Job By Tracking Trends David White used Ladders and his knowledge of the market to land a CIO position near his home in Wisconsin.David White was under no illusions that his position as director of project management for a large Wisconsin health-insurance provider would be permanent. As a former consultant, 46-year-old White reviewed local and national job boards daily to gauge market conditions and get a feel for career and employment trends. When another project-management job opened up on Ladders with one of the largest HMOs in the area, the OpsLadder member jumped at the opportunity.âThese director of project management jobs donât open up often, and it was with one of three companies that Iâd said I would love to work for if a position ever opened up,â White said.White, who lives about 20 minutes north of Madison, Wis., signed on for a two-year contract and said he and his team were on track to finish when he realized that he may have done his job a little too well.âWeâd done so well on this project that I knew it was just a matter of time before they would have to downsize the project team,â White said. âI knew this was coming - we had about 71 positions that were going to be removed.âWhite took an early âoutâ from his contract and after searching the job boards, located and landed a full-time position as a chief information officer with a large public accounting firm in the Madison area.âI hooked up with this new CIO position in about 35 days,â he said. âEven in the midst of the economic crisis that was getting worse in November of last year, I knew that with my skills and my knowledge of trends in the market that Iâd be able to find something without a problem,â he said.An insider advantageWhite said his knowledge of employment trends and other career information definitely gave him an advantage over other job seekers, since it allowed him to set realistic expectations about potential opportunities, salaries and benefits and the length of time i t would take to secure a new position. He said Ladders was an invaluable resource, and that as the number of available jobs decreased, many other employment sites and recruiters would go to great lengths to appeal to job hunters.âOn every job board I was tracking, I saw that the number of available jobs was dwindling,â White said. âAnother thing I noticed is that often, numerous recruiting firms would post the same position, but word the posting differently so it would look like they had a number of jobs available.âHe said he realized quickly that if a position went up on Ladders, he could be certain that the position was unique and that the organization was completely serious about finding the right fit to fill that specific role.âMany times, youâd see a position go up on a job board, and youâd interview and follow up only to find that the company had filled the position from within,â he said. âMany companies are required to post jobs internally first, but these ki nds of âfalse positionsâ donât really help job seekers.âKeeping track of employment trendsIn his current CIO position, White said he still keeps a close eye on online employment sites to help him perform his duties and ensure his new company is doing the best job it can for its employees.âI have to understand the stresses that are impacting my employees, how high the demand is for their specific skills, and whether or not weâre in danger of losing valuable folks because salaries and benefits are better elsewhere.âKeeping charts and data from sites like Ladders and constantly reviewing the siteâs extensive resource library can also help White understand what his company will need to offer when building teams to tackle projects, how long it might take to fill specific positions, and what current pay rates and salaries potential employees can expect, he said.âItâs really a fantastic âhuman capital forecaster,ââ White said.

Is There a Lie on Your Resume Probably!
Is There a Lie on Your Resume Probably! Is There a Lie on Your Resume Probably! In a recent study âThe Dishonest Tradition of Fudging the Facts on a Resume,â Grad School Hub discovered that many, many job seekers are engaging in the nefarious practice of resume lying. A whopping 78 percent of people admitted that their resumes are misleading, and at least 50 percent have at least a small amount of misleading information on their resume. So why are job seekers lying on their resumes? Well, a few reasons factor into the equation. Fearing ageism, some candidates leave off graduation dates so that they can appear younger. Working mothers who wish to return to work may fudge dates in an attempt to cover up large gaps in employment. And some recent grads may raise their GPAs or even âawardâ themselves with extra honors they didnât earn. People may change dates in an attempt to hide the fact that they were fired from a job or spent part of their career job hopping. And which job seekers are most likely to lie on a resume? Both male and female job seekers tell lies, but which sex is the biggest fibber? In general, men lie twice as much as women do- on average, men tell six lies per day and women tell three. For example, men will rate their past job performance 30 percent higher than it actually was, while women will rate theirs only 15 percent higher. And if youâre wondering where the whoppers, um, lie on a resume, it is actually scattered throughout the resume. People lie about everything from inflated salary claims (40 percent), to inaccurate job descriptions (33 percent), to altered employment dates (29 percent). What are the consequences of telling a lie on a resume? Lying comes with consequences. According to the study, 36 percent of the time resume padding is discovered, the employee is fired. And for those who admitted that their resume was not 100 percent accurate, 27 percent lost their jobs. And even if you donât lose your job, there can be other ways in which your lie can cost you. Not only can you damage your personal (and professional) reputation, but lying is considered a big character flaw that can result in embarrassment for you- as well as a loss of job references. Bigger penalties can be possible termination (despite years of loyal service) or even legal action. While it may be tempting to make your resume as perfect as possible, itâs not a good idea to do it at the expense of lying. After all, thereâs a very good chance that your lie can be uncovered, and you could lose your job- and your credibility. So make the most of your past work experience, your accolades, and your skills, and let them shine on your job application. That way, your true work (and not a lie) will speak for itself- and get you the job you truly deserve. Readers, have you ever lied on your resume? Did you get caught? Let us know about your experiences in the comments section below!
